So, I now have our project’s to-do list in one note shared with my partner via the Web and a shopping list shared with the missus via iOS. But while you can use it at that level it actually has a lot more going on.įor a start SimpleNote incorporates Markdown, a technique for including XHTML markup by using very simple inline notation along with versioning, Web publishing, sharing, sending by email, and downloading your lists in a ZIP file. Īt first blush, Simplenote appears to be just what its name implies a simple note keeping system and what makes it perfect for my purposes is that you can share and collaboratively edit individual notes. On the Web site there are references to a premium plan but I couldn’t find any further information it appears that they may have dropped this version. Simplenote is available as a free app for iOS, Android, OS X, and Kindle (but not for Windows) and can be accessed from the Web. All apps, backups, syncing and sharing are completely free. After a little research I decided to try a free application, Simplenote published by Automattic, and much to my delight I found I’d stumbled over the perfect solution. Markdown format allows you to write, preview, and publish notes. We were using a basic CRM solution but that turned out to be a little too much for what was a very simple list. You can enable Markdown support in Simplenote by clicking on the information icon and selecting the option: Markdown Formatted. Simplenote has an interesting export option called Publish to Web, in which the user can generate a public URL for a document and share it with others. If you are unsure how markdown formatting works and how to use it, Simplenote does provide resources that will help you learn the basics. This includes things like headers, bullet lists, italics, underlines, etc. When markdown formatting is enabled, it essentially allows you to use basic HTML coding that will help format the final product. It's important to know that Automattic does not encrypt your files and the synchronization option cannot be disabled. The option for markdown formatting is great for those who want to use Simplenote to share and publish their notes. To use the program it's necessary to create an account, by doing this your documents will be synchronized on all your devices through the Automattic server. ![]() Simplenote is free and open source, you can visit the tool repository on GitHub and have access to the source code for all versions. ![]() Simplenote has versions for the Web, running directly in your browser, as well as versions for mobile devices and Desktop.Ĭompatibility is also excellent, the program is available for most operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.
